Records number of records set in the pool
There were 32 records set at these Games in 27 of the swimming events. The previous best was 29 swimming records at a single Games. On Wednesday night there were 10 finals and an incredible nine new Games records.
In the men’s 4x100m medley relay two separate records were set in the same race. Grant Halsall of the Isle of Man began by setting a new Games record on his opening backstroke leg and then Team Guernsey came through to win the event, also in a new Games record.
One swimmer in particular has stood out. Pal Joensen from the Faroes won a medal in every discipline he entered from 50m to 1500m and swam in a staggering total of 38 races, winning eight golds, six silver and two bronze.
Swimming co-ordinator Kjell Hansen is almost lost for words when it comes to describing the atmosphere in the pool and could only say: “We’re all just stunned!”
